Goal
To create environment for searching, selection and arrangement of the most insightful ideas and theories for the most important problems of mankind. The environment that will direct process toward the goal of finding the truth while taking into consideration personality psychology, social self-organization laws and any other useful scientific and philosophical theories. To create self-organazing social system that will be the catalyst of human education and progress.
Manifest
People live for the things they love and ideas they believe. Human history shows us that impact of idea can be huge if the idea could have been shaped in consistent with feelings and unconscious eagerness of a person. We think that history is full of confirming examples: buddism, christianity, renaissance, the third reich, the soviet unioun just to name a few - all these were the powerful attempts to change the undesired reality with some theory in mind.
Recent progress in neuroscience, genetics and psychology makes impact of ideas almost enormous. In near future mankind will not be dependant from the hard-wired feeling structure. Emotional values that almost every person have from birth. People will have the power to change the so far sacred inherent properties of moral structure of every child.
Without need to obey rules that was naturally hard wired mankind will get more power to control themselfs. But this power also can be the last achievement of humanity. Under such circumstances one failure idea that will capture the world will be the last one.
The only way for people not to get lost in the chaos of seemed equal-value principles is to create robust environment for ideas creation and testing. The environment that will absord all the knowledge of the world and direct process toward the goal of finding the truth.
We believe that the only chance to get the truth it is to consciously and cooperatively to move towards this goal. From the social psychology we know that isolated single person as well as group of like-minded persons is prone to so-called confirmation bias as well as other cognitive biases and is not very good at getting the things as they are. We are very dependent from the work we are doing every day, the friends we are communicating, the culture that is dominating in our society, the books we are reading, films we are watching and all the other sorts of experience that form our environment.
Yet only person can create ideas. And one person can read only about several thousand books for the whole life. So it is of critical importance to increase quality of on formation that is one read. We want to create an open source project that will help people to see the holistic view of the global picture of existing opinions on the problem under consideration.
Roadmap
To this moment our main concerns are
- create community
- create personal knowledge base tool - a kind of a user interface for file storage with highly usable interface that will take into consideration the list of cognitive biases
- create independant web search based on the structure induced by personal knowledge base tool
Web search
Why not Google? Because this is not the Google scope. Google gives resources that are most popular among majority of internet websites. It does not take into account that very often the most unprejudiced view on a problem can be formed only from many-sided set of controversial and contradictory set of opinions.
What is worse - this fact is obvious only on a simple search queries. To give an example let's look at what Google tells you about such phenomenon as christianity. It will show you links to definitions of term "christianity" in different encyclopedia-like sites. Not very much indeed taking in account world heritage of works of Thomas Aquinas, Bertrand Russell, Nietzsche, Richard Dawkins, Fyodor Dostoyevsky just to name a few. And searching on a complex queries in a Google does not give you the feeling that you are missing something important. Especially if you are not very familiar with the question under consideration.
We want to create open source and distributed web search tool that will scale up the quality of web search for people concerned with the most important problems of mankind. The tool that will give you holistic and all-round picture on the world.
The are two fundamental assumptions that lay at the heart of Yoopus web search.
- It is possible to extract from internet so called yoopus-graph.
- It is possible to create algorithm that can extract from yoopus graph the most insightful information on a problem under research.
To fulfill first assumption we decided so far to create subproject called Yoopus Personal Knowledge Base (YPKB).
To work on the second assumption we started to investigate mathematical background on a "scale free network"
Talking about tactical tasks, we need to fill yoopus database with some initial graph that can be obtained for example by extracting authors from wikipedia, egde, youarenotsosmart.com, arxiv and obtaining freely avalible documents for their authorship. We are going to give a try to the OpenSearchServer
